Om Shanti Om (2007; guest appearance) - Review in English

In this film Sanjay does just a guest appearance as himself!

About the story: In Bombay in the 70’s, Om Prakash Makhija (Shahrukh Khan) and his buddy Pappu (Shreyas Talpade) are dreaming of a big film career though they’re just junior artists. One fine day on a film set, Om saves star heroine Shantipriya (Deepika Padukone), whom he’s in love with, out of burning haystucks and thus becomes friends with her. He has no idea that she is secretly married to film producer Mukesh Mehra (Arjun Rampal) who has very special plans with her...

Om Shanti Om is a colourful declaration of love to the Hindi Cinema, of the 70’s aswell as of today. Even though the story has its weaknesses, especially in the second half – as a piece of masala entertainment it works very well, and that’s just what Farah Khan intended who, after Main Hoon Na, once again shows her qualitites as dircetor and choreographer in one. Hindi cinema connoisseurs will have fun with loads of film citations and hints, and SRK fans will love this movie unconditionally as the star once again sparkles his temperament and humour. Even though in my opinion the film’s secret stars are others: Arjun Rampal who plays a very convincing baddie (too bad that the script never gives Mukesh a real chance against Om which would have made the story more thrilling), the likeable Shreyas Talpade and especially the two adorable ladies and acting highlights Kirron Kher and Bindu.

The star viewing’s highlight comes with a Filmfare Award function where nearly the entire Bollywood High Society appears (and Abhishek Bachchan and Akshay Kumar give two admirably witty performances) and afterwards dances in the „Deewangi“ song. So much Bollywood at one go you don’t see every day – just have a look on the 30 stars joining Shahrukh Khan in this clip: Rani Mukherjee, Zayed Khan, Vidya Balan, Tusshar Kapoor, Jeetendra, Priyanka Chopra, Shilpa Shetty, Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi, Urmila Matondkar, Karisma Kapoor, Arbaaz Khan, Malaika Arora Khan, Dino Morea, Amrita Arora, Juhi Chawla, Aftab Shivdasani, Tabu, Govinda, Mithun Chakraborty, Kajol, Bobby Deol, Preity Zinta, Rekha, Ritesh Deshmukh, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutta and Suniel Shetty. A casting coup which surely won Om Shanti Om a lot of additional fans.

Yes, even Sanju joined the party and obviously had a ball wishing Om „good luck“ in his best Munnabhai style and then rocking on the bar together with Shahrukh, Saif and Salman. In case he later watched the whole movie, he possibly got a bit of gooseflesh watching the scene where Om saves Shantipriya out of the burning haystucks, as it reminds on a similar accident at the sets of Mother India which turned out to become the beginning of his parents’ love story: Even Sunil Dutt (who in OSO even is to be seen in a scene from Amrapali) had saved Nargis out of burning haystucks. Which once again shows that the best reel scenes are still provided by the real life.
